Old traditions in a new world

Those of you who follow my tweets and Facebook status updates know that I’ve been working on a blacksmithing video documentary for a class in my grad school program.

I’m happy to say that Part 1 of the documentary is finally complete:

Old Traditions in a New World from Laura Rush on Vimeo.

Part 2 should be finished within the next couple of weeks, and I’ll post it here when it’s done.

It was a great experience to be able to work with everyone at the Blacksmiths’ Guild of the Potomac. I was warmly welcomed into their community, and I feel honored that I was able to get to know them and tell the rest of the world what a fantastic group of people they are.

Really nice job Laura, how impressive and a very interesting topic!

  • Ms. Luara, I must commend your efforts and compliment your work. This first part is constructed very well, and your messages are clear to the point and filled with example. It’s unfortunate that the reality is that the craft although not dead….and showing less of an interest especially with our younger generations, whom seem to be more interested in psp’s, wii, and computer games. I look forward to seeing the rest of your documentary. One behalf of the craft thank you.

I loved your doc, it fetured my dad Phil Heath and was really good to see him all the way over here in Devon England. It brought back memories of the old family blacksmiths in the town where i still live

Very descriptive & interesting documentary—good job! The BGOP members are a wonderful, & very talented group. Their demonstrations at public events actually capture the rapt attention of the younger generation, & they ask lots of questions. Two of my younger grandchildren (1 boy/1 girl) are already enjoying hammering iron & making functional items.
I anticipate reading Part 2. Thanks!!

Thanks so much to everyone for all your kind words. This is the first piece I’ve ever put together, so to hear that people liked it is so rewarding (and motivating!). I’m still working on Part 2 — it will be posted sometime soon, and I hope that you like it, too.

  • Laura,

Really nice job on this piece. Eager to see what you can do in our Interactive Skills class.

  • Really hard to believe this is your first effort. Really well shot, edited, narrated … I think you’ve got film making in your blood.
